Llys Meredydd

OO9-group

The LWMRS 009 Model Railway Group brings together members with an interest in modelling narrow gauge railways at 4mm scale using 9mm gauge track. For many years, Nick Meredith, a long-standing member of the LWMRS, had tried to garner support for the creation of a 009 layout. Sadly, Nick never got to follow his interest fully at the club, as he unexpectedly passed away in April 2025. As a mark of respect, the remaining group members decided to name the new 009 layout Llys Meredydd.

The LWMRS 009 Model Railway Group brings together members with an interest in modelling narrow gauge railways at 4mm scale using 9mm gauge track. The group is committed to fostering creative expression, upholding high technical standards, and ensuring reliable operation. Through the development of shared layouts, collaboration on projects, and regular meetings, the group aims to promote and advance the discipline of 009 scale railway modelling.

Naming of the new OO9 layout - Llys Meredydd.
For many years, Nick Meredith, a long-standing member of the LWMRS, had tried to garner support for the creation of a 009 layout. Nick had spent many years as a volunteer on the Ffestiniog railway and had extensive knowledge of the whole line and the area around the railway,
When the LWMRS Clubroom was extended, space was allocated for the creation of a 009 layout. Nick gathered a small group of interested members and developed an outline proposal for a modular layout with a Welsh influence.
Sadly, Nick never got to follow his interest fully at the club, as he unexpectedly passed away in April 2025.
As a mark of respect, the remaining group members decided to name the new 009 layout Llys Meredydd.
The group standards have steadily progressed and have reached version 6. Track plans have been developed for five modules and the two traversers:
Engine shed, Crossing, Departmental Yard and Tanygrisau Station with track being laid on the first three boards and the DCC bus laid throughout to allow electrical testing to commence.
The modular approach that allows modules to be configured in many ways was demonstrated at the Great British Train show and gained widespread acceptance.

Progress to date
The group was formed at the start of 2025 with meetings to determine our approach to building an 009-gauge model railway that, in the future may be suitable to exhibit.
The primary decision was to build a modular layout with each module being “owned” by an individual member. To ensure compatibility and interoperability when the modules are brought together, standards have been developed that define:
• Module size
• Position of board-to-board track (the main line that runs from end to end)
• The trackage system
• The DCC system to be used
• The board to board common electrical connections.
• The prototype area to be Welsh / Ffestiniog based.
Current Activities
Track plans for each of the modules are being developed.
One module will have a model of Tan y Grisiau Station that was demolished in the 1960’s.
A “Standards Booklet” is being progressively developed to guide current and new members.
