On Saturday 24th September 2011 a small group from the society visited the Thames Valley Signalling Centre at Didcot. A couple of very interesting hours were spent with the signalling staff who control the West of England main line through Reading. The interest was increased by the maintenance having an engineering possession over the weekend of two of the four main lines through Reading station, and a full weekend service being run, together with some emergency ballast repair being needed on the Basiingstoke and West route to the west and of the side of Reading station that was open. The visit then included a view of the training simulator used to cross-train staff to use the facility.
