| Stanley Midland – Gauge 1 |
|
Stanley Midland, some 50ft long by 24ft wide, is the portable exhibition layout, built and run by the midland group of the Gauge One Model Railway Association to a scale of 10mm to 1ft. Now some 25 years old it is much changed from the original concept. Modelled on a fictitious main line station, some time during the steam era, with island platforms and a marshalling yard it has a joint GWR, LMS and GCR flavour enabling trains of all regions and companies, to run together and not look out of place. Although partially scenic there has to be some form of fiddle yard to store and make up the trains ready for their half hour run, hence the storage sidings on the far side opposite the station. The majority of locos are live steam and there is much interest shown when they are fired up in the steaming bay, as they are fired by methylated spirit, gas or even coal. The electric locos both steam and modern outline are battery powered enabling them to run at the same time as live steam.
